Playground Games put a number on how long it would take to beat Fable. Associate game director Will Kennedy told press at Gamescom the main quest is about 15 to 20 hours. Side content and open-world exploration add another 15 to 20. Then he pointed at the life systems and how long you could truly play the game for.
"Of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want," Kennedy said in the Polygon Q&A. Someone in the room called it not a huge game. Associate game director Craig Littler jumped in. "As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do."
Beat the story in a long weekend if you ignore Albion. Stay if you buy houses, run businesses, take jobs, start a family, and work the reputation sliders in every town. Previews have talked about more than 1,000 NPCs, blacksmithing, crime, and a hero people love or hate depending on the village. Those toys are what Playground is counting as the second half of the runtime.
The old Fable games also worked the same way. The plot was never a 80-hour epic. You inflated the clock by kicking chickens, getting married, and buying every shop on the street. Playground is betting that loop still sells when the combat demo is what Gamescom put on the screen.
Fable launches February 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Same-day PS5 is a first for the series. The project was announced in 2020, slipped out of 2026, and landed in a window Playground has described as clearer than sitting next to Grand Theft Auto 6 in November.
Fifteen to 20 hours of mainline quests is short next to a lot of open-world RPGs that advertise 60. Forty hours if you clean the map. Forever if you treat Albion like a life sim with swords. That is the split Kennedy and Littler described. You will know which number is real when the game is out and you play it for yourself, not from a Gamescom hallway.
For those who have not seen it yet, here is an extended look at the gameplay in Fable for you to watch:
