The ever-expanding THQ Nordic empire just got even bigger, as the studio has acquired Piranha Bytes.

Piranha is a Bochum-based game developer responsible for some of the most famous role-playing games in Central Europe, including hits like Gothic, Risen 2: Dark Waters, and their most recent Elex.

Piranha is one of the most iconic German game studios and the creators of RPG´s Gothic, Risen and, more recently, Elex," THQ Nordic CEO Lars Wingefors explained in a press release. "The three strong IPs have proven successful and will be great additions to our portfolio. We look forward bringing Piranha team into the family which has received legendary status across the RPG community as their fan base cherishes their current games and eagerly anticipates their new titles in the future.”

We have a successful and long-standing relationship with THQ Nordic and are very excited to join the group," Piranha Bytes CEO Michael Ruve added. "THQ Nordic has unparalleled experience and capabilities in games development and publishing, and we are convinced they are the perfect partner to support Piranha in taking the studio to the next level. We see a unique opportunity to continue to develop great [...] and impactful RPG games, now being part of the THQ Nordic family.”

As a reminder, THQ Nordic's recent acquisitions allowed the publisher to assemble an impressive catalogue of world-famous game series, including Saints Row, Dead Island, Darksiders, Metro, Outcast, Titan Quest, Kingdoms of Amalur, Time Splitters, Destroy All Humans, Jagged Alliance, Homefront, Alone in the Dark, Act of War, SpellForce, Kingdom Come, and now also Gothic, Risen, and Elex.
