Exactly a month ago, some
dataminers managed to find some very mysterious Super Nintendo files on the Nintendo Switch Online's Nintendo Entertainment System feature; hinting at the company finally adding another console to the online service that began in September.
The data found by these avid dataminers revealed that over 20 Super Nintendo files had been added, including iconic titles like
Super Mario World,
Star Fox,
Super Mario Kart, and
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past — amongst other classic games.
These Super Nintendo files had a bunch of fans excited over the news, especially since Nintendo's online service has been pretty lacking in video game content since it launched. Today, a dataminer going by the name of
@itssimontime, has revealed on his Twitter account that these files can no longer be found on the Nintendo Switch Online NES feature.
While this isn't unexpected, what makes the whole thing interesting is the fact that we are getting a new
Nintendo Direct at 2PM Pacific Time, where this new "Super Nintendo Entertaiment System" feature could be officially unveiled.
Given that the NES and SNES are two completely different consoles, Nintendo may have removed the files in order to create a different application for the new games being added, so it is rather exciting news for those fans who have been anticipating more classic titles to be added to the online service.
Reggie Fils-Aimé, Nintendo of America COO, has previously mentioned that
more games are definitely coming to the Nintendo Switch Online service, so it was never a matter of "if" but "when", and maybe we'll finally get our answer after today's long-overdue Nintendo Direct.
