This week, Nintendo officially announced the Nintendo Switch 2. The successor to the mega-popular Nintendo Switch console features a larger console and Joy-Cons that now snap into the device rather than sliding. Many of the console's specific details are still to come with Nintendo promising a Switch 2-focused Direct presentation in April.
Until then, pre-order details, the release date, and pricing are all up for speculation. However, some retailers are giving gamers the option to sign up for notifications to be the first to hear the exciting launch news.
Best Buy has set its Nintendo Switch pre-order page live. While you can't actually pre-order the console yet, there is the option to sign up for notifications "about the new Nintendo Switch 2, games and more."
"Find out when you can pre-order," the page reads. "The evolution of Nintendo gaming continues. Sign up below to receive information about when you can pre-order this new system, news about upcoming games and more."
The page is unfortunately void of the details many of us care about, such as pricing and the actual release date. However, with retailers now starting to set up their Nintendo Switch 2 pages, it's possible some could slip up andprematurely post the launch date or other exciting details.
Nintendo has already confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released in 2025, but has not offered a more specific window. We've seen leaks that suggest it could launch in May or June; however, with the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 scheduled for April 2nd, that would be a pretty quick turnaround. It's possible that the Switch 2 could release later this year, making it one of 2025's biggest holiday items.
Nintendo has also confirmed that the Switch 2 will play both Switch 2 exclusive games as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. The company notes, "Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2," but said more details will be shared at a later date.
While this week's announcement trailer focused mostly on the console itself, we did see what looks to be the Switch 2's first launch title. Although not officially announced, the game shown was an untitled Mario Kart. This wouldn't be a huge shocker as Mario Kart is one of Nintendo's biggest properties and a franchise with wide enough reach to appeal to everyone, not just hardcore gamers.
What were your thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement? Were you hoping for more details from Nintendo or was the highlight teaser video enough to get you excited?
