Fans of the
Mother series — also known as
EarthBound here in the West — know exactly how hard it is to be a fan of the series, especially since the series doesn't really exist outside of Japan besides some glorified cameos of
Mother characters in the
Super Smash Bros. series.
EarthBound, which is actually the second game in the
Mother series, is officially the only game that has released in the West, but we were very close to getting a secodn release when Nintendo announced
EarthBound 64 back in the mid 90s; a game that was, sadly, cancelled.
Little is known about this cancelled project, especially since most of the information is from early stages of development; most of it was never even translated for Western audiences. Thankfully, the EarthBound/Mother fanbase have been doing a great job translating every bit of information they can find.
Thanks to YouTube channel SourceGaming, we now have some more information about the cancelled
EarthBound 64; more in particular about the game's main protagonist Lucas, who ended up becoming the protagonist of the official
Mother 3 game that released in Japan for the Game Boy Advance.
This new information that has resurfaced online, offers descriptions of Lucas and his twin brother Claus; two characters that are actually part of the Game Boy Advance game. It is also worth mentioning that
EarthBound 64 was simply titled
Mother 3 in Japan, so most elements and ideas in the game were used by the developers; only the platform changed.
