Back in 2018, Nintendo set a pretty ambitious goal by revealing that they wanted to sell an impressive 20 million in hardware; specifically referring to Nitnendo Switch consoles, as the Nitnendo 3DS family of systems was no longer on their list of priorities.
According to a recent report by Nikkei, it seems that Nintendo is now looking to rise production of their flagship handheld hybrid console — which means that they are aiming to produce over 20 million Nintendo Switch units this fiscal year.
A Nintendo representative revealed that The Big N is expecting to produce, at the very least, 10% more of Nintendo Switch consoles in 2020; hoping to produce a staggering 22 million units as the company enters the console's third year since its original launch in March of 2017.
"We hope [suppliers] will be responsive to the production increase, but for procurement of some parts, the outlook remains uncertain, and we can't forecast exactly how many Switches can be supplied," revealed the unnamed representative.
Considering that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are nearing the end of their life cycle, things could be looking up for the Nintendo Switch, and the company producing — and, more important, selling — 22 million units seems more than plausible now than it ever did back in 2018.
In February of 2019, we found out that Nintendo couldn't sell those 20 million units, but the Japanese company has been focusing on boosting the console's appeal ever since, and this year just might be the one in which they finally reach their ambitious goal. We'll just have to wait and see.
