The Nintendo Switch has done what seemed to be impossible, as it's been reported that the handheld hybrid console has just surpassed the PlayStation 4's lifetime sales in Japan; reaching quite an important milestone for Nintendo, especially after the Wii U's monumental failure.
Just last week Famitsu was reporting that the
Nintendo Switch had been able to sell an estimate of 42,108 units in Japan during the last week of April, which had pushed the console's lifetime sales to an estimate of 8,042,166 units since its launch in March of 2017.
Sony's PlayStation 4 had sold, since its launch in November of 2013, an estimate of 8,047,754 units in The Land of the Rising Sun, and was about to be surpassed by the Nintendo Switch at any point soon.
As reported by Famitsu, the Nintendo Switch has now officially surpassed the PlayStation 4's lifetime sales in Japan, with a staggering 8,125,637 consoles sold. This happened over the week between the 29th of April and the 12th of May, where Nintendo sold 83,471 consoles, as opposed to Sony's 30,003 PlayStation 4 systems.
It is worth mentioning that Japan loves handheld consoles because of how convenient they are, due to their busy lifestyle, so the Nintendo Switch — as successfull as it is — was bound to dethrone the PlayStation 4 at some point. What's impressive is that this milestone was reached only two years after the Nintendo Switch was launched; keeping in mind that Sony had a 4-year head start with the PlayStation 4. Without a doubt, an impressive feat.
