Following a disappointing lifecycle for the Wii U, Nintendo has found new life in the Nintendo Switch, which has officially become the fastest-selling video game system in U.S. history.

Having launched on March 3, 2017, the Switch has sold more than 4.8 million units in the United States in just 10 months, according to Nintendo's latest figures. That's the highest total for the first 10 months of any home video game system in U.S. history, surpassing Nintendo's wn Wii system, which was the previous record holder with more than 4 million units sold during that same timeframe.

While Nintendo's innovative design - a home/portable console hybrid - can partly be attributed to the system's success, a lot of it also has to do with its library of games, which includes Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - two of the hightest-rated games in historyAccording to Nintendo, more than 60 percent of Switch owners have Odyssey, and over 55 percent own Breath of the Wild. Additionally, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 boast attach rates of more than 50 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

Looking ahead, NIntendo-published games like Kirby Star, Allies, Bayonetta, and Bayonetta 2, along with a slew of third-party games, will likely continue to boost Switch sales.
