Armored Mewtwo is coming back to Pokemon GO for the first time since 2020. The Pokemon Company and Scopely confirmed the return at the 2026 Pokemon World Championships closing ceremony in San Francisco. It will appear in five-star raids during Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time both days.

Six years is a long time to wait on a costume legendary. Players who missed it the first time, or transferred it, or just want another shot at a better IV, finally have a weekend on the calendar. Scopely’s own post kept the movie tie-in front and center. "Mewtwo strikes back in Raid Battles…in that form," the blog said. Armored Mewtwo, as seen in Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution from 2019, is a version of Mewtwo whose power is held back by armor. "Even so, Armored Mewtwo possesses overwhelming strength that surpasses other Pokemon."

Do not plan a shiny hunt around this weekend. Shiny Armored Mewtwo is not available. That is the line that is going to sting for anyone who has been sitting on raid passes specifically for a sparkle. Regular Armored Mewtwo in five-star raids is still the event. Mega Mewtwo X is also showing up in Super Mega Raids at certain gyms during event hours, and other Mega raid bosses rotate with the active habitats.

Mega Finale is the cap on a longer GO Fest week, not a one-off raid hour. Mega Ascension runs August 31 through September 4, with rotating Mega raid bosses and the Regi trio in five-star raids. Then the two-day finale takes over the weekend with habitats repeating twice a day from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Armored Mewtwo stays in five-star raids across both days.

The same weekend is also when Mega Evolutions pick up extra tools. Eligible Mega-Evolved Pokemon that can reach Super Max Level get an additional Charged Attack while Mega Evolved, no matter which Mega Level they are on. The power of those attacks scales as Mega Level goes up. Mega Mewtwo X learns Dynamic Punch+. Mega Mewtwo Y learns Future Sight+. Those two also gain Adventure Effects when they first learn the moves.

A batch of other featured Megas get new Charged Attacks for the finale as well. Mega Chesnaught gets Seed Bomb+. Mega Delphox gets Mystical Fire+. Mega Greninja gets Surf+. Mega X Raichu gets Volt Tackle+. Mega Y Raichu gets Zap Cannon+. Mega Skarmory gets Drill Peck+. Mega Falinks gets Brick Break+. Mega Starmie gets Liquidation+. Mega Victreebel gets Acid Spray+. Mega Malamar gets Psybeam+. Mega Dragonite gets Outrage+. If you are already Mega-ing those species, the weekend is as much a moveset check as it is a raid target.

Armored Mewtwo sits next to all of that as the nostalgia boss. It is a movie form, not a new Mega. The armor look comes out of Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution, which Scopely noted is streaming on Netflix. The design has always been a flex more than a meta puzzle. People want it because it has been gone, because it looks like the film, and because five-star raid weekends still set the social calendar for a lot of local groups.

Worlds was packed with Pokemon news this year, from the Wild Card movie to Champions’ Z Megas. The GO drop is the one that actually hits this week. September 5 and 6 are close enough that raid groups can plan now. Bring enough people for a five-star Mewtwo. Do not count on a shiny. Check the extra Mega charged attacks if you have been putting off powering those forms.

The honest limit of a return like this is that it will feel huge for collectors and routine for anyone who already has one boxed from 2020. For everyone else, it is two days of armored legendary raids and a Mega system that just grew another charged move. That is a full weekend even if the sparkle stays locked.

Will you be raiding for an Armored Mewtwo on September 5 and 6, or skipping it until a shiny is actually available? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
