In Masahiro Sakurai's weekly column on Famitsu magazine, the
Super Smash Bros. and
Kirby series creator revealed something quite interesting about his stance on video game awards — which could rub some people the wrong way, even though he is actually right.
In his column, Sakurai talks about
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate winning a handful of awards at the Japan Game Awards during this year's Tokyo Game Show; revealing that he thinks giving video games awards is presumptuous because all games are valuable for their own different reasons.
"
First off, I should mention something. I think it’s presumptuous to line up games and give them awards. All games are valuable and shine through their own particularities. We shouldn’t be using specific criterias to decide whether a game is superior to another or not. But this is only my personal way of thinking, and I’m thankful to those reading this column."
Sakurai isn't wrong in thinking that all games should be treated equally instead of using specific criterias to judge them against other titles.
The
Super Smash Bros. series creator, however, is also quite happy that the latest entry in his crossover fighting series won a bunch of awards. Like Sakurai said, it is the criteria used to judge games that he doesn't like, not the fact that games get the recognition they deserve; something that
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is very well-deserving of.
