According to Entertainment Retailers Association(ERA), the video game industry is currently worth an impressive £3.86 billion, which roughly amounts to $4.85 billion; which is more than its value back in 2007; making it more lucrative than video and music combined.
Like we reported earlier,
FIFA 19 was the best-selling boxed video game of 2018 in the UK, with
Red Dead Redemption 2 and
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 getting the second and third places, respectively. It is precisely because of titles like those that the video game industry has managed to thrive the way it has.
According to Chief Executive of Era, Kim Bayley, the video game industry has seen the potential of digital technology and took advantage of it.
"
The games industry has been incredibly effective in taking advantage of the potential of digital technology to offer new and compelling forms of entertainment. Despite being the youngest of our three sectors, it is now by far the biggest."
It is also worth mentioning that FIFA 19, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 each managed to sell over 1 million in physical copies and, while these numbers are impressive, the study doesn't take into account very successful mobile and free-to-play games like Fortnite; arguably the most popular game in the world right now.
