The world of RuneScape: Dragonwilds is preparing for its next evolution with the upcoming 0.8 update, scheduled to arrive in early June 2025. Developer Jagex recently previewed what's in store, including a new spell skill, quality-of-life improvements, and some long-awaited updates to the game’s foundation.
While the 0.8 patch isn’t expected to be a massive content drop, it still brings exciting additions, especially for magic-focused players. Among the highlights is a flashy new teleportation spell called Surge, which gives spellcasters a valuable tool to evade enemy attacks and reposition quickly during combat.
Surge Spell Revealed: A Boost for Magic Builds
Currently, RuneScape: Dragonwilds features limited magical abilities, but that’s starting to change. The Surge spell was officially teased via the game’s @RSDragonwilds account on X, showcasing a short but energetic animation of the teleport ability in action.
Perfect for a caster-focused build, Surge is designed for fast movement and tactical plays, letting players blink out of harm’s way during tense encounters. This marks a key milestone for the still-developing magic skill tree, which may be expanded further in this update with it possibly going up to level 50, though that’s yet to be confirmed.
The addition of Surge helps address one of the most common requests from players: more variety for magic users in early access. And while full spell trees and advanced spellcasting systems are still in the works, this update signals a clear commitment to fleshing out the magical side of Dragonwilds.
Other Features Coming in the 0.8 Update
According to Mod Doom, who spoke during last week’s live stream, the 0.8 update will drop during the first week of June, though an exact release date has not been shared. Other additions include:
- New buildable base components
- Improvements to the game engine for better performance
- Bug fixes and gameplay stability enhancements
- Expanded keyboard rebinding options
- Potential adjustments to Velgar events
- Minor quality-of-life changes for base-building systems
It’s important to note that ranged skill updates are not expected in 0.8, despite player interest. Those improvements may come in future updates, possibly in the highly anticipated 0.10 patch, which Jagex says will bring an entirely new region and major new features.
What’s Next for Dragonwilds?
Jagex confirmed that a recap blog for the Twitch live stream will be posted in the coming days, which could bring more details about the magic tree, Surge spell mechanics, and what to expect in future content rollouts.
While 0.8 may not be a game-changing update, it continues to lay the groundwork for RuneScape: Dragonwilds' long-term growth. For magic users in particular, this patch might finally offer the tools they need to thrive in battle.
