Borderlands 3 unleashed mayhem earlier this month and now it's breaking all sorts of records for both the series and publisher 2K.
As announced today,
Borderlands 3 sold-in more than five million units within the first five days of its launch. Consumer sales for the third installment in Gearbox's looter-shooter series are up 50 percent more versus sales of its predecessor, Borderlands 2, making it the fastest -selling game in 2K's history. It's also the highest-selling title for the label on PC in a five-day window - a major achievement considering all of the drama attached to its Epic Games store exclusivity.
"Initial sales of Borderlands 3 have exceeded the label’s expectations and, in particular, PC sales of the title through the Epic Games Store have been incredibly strong," 2K said in its press release. Additionally, digital sales for
Borderlands 3 are the highest ever for 2K (for a cross-platform, cross-distribution title) with more than 70 percent of consumers buying the game digitally. It was also the highest pre-ordered game ever for 2K, and broke pre-order records for the Epic Games Store.
With more than five million units sold-in,
Borderlands has now generated more th an $1 billion as a franchise, becoming just the second franchise in 2K to achieve this feat (the other being
Grand Theft Auto).
“The response from the Borderlands 3 fans and community has been overwhelming,” said Randy Pitchford, founder of The Gearbox Entertainment Company and
Borderlands 3 executive producer.
“The mission of Gearbox is to entertain the world and with the record-breaking success of Borderlands 3, we’re excited to take one more giant leap down that road. On behalf of the incredible development team and everyone who has had a hand in making this achievement possible, I extend our warmest thanks to our fans."
Best of all, Gearbox has plans to continue supporting
Borderlands 3 beyond its launch with updates and patches, new features, free content (and paid DLC), events, and other unannounced surprises.
Borderlands 3 is now available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
