Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Is a New Real-Time Strategy Game Coming in 2026
A brand-new Game of Thrones real-time strategy game has been officially announced during the Summer Game Fest showcase. Titled Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the game is being developed by Australian studio PlaySide Studios in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive, and is scheduled to release on PC in 2026.
Described as a “classic, premium real-time strategy game,” War for Westeros invites players to take control of one of the franchise’s iconic factions House Stark, House Targaryen, House Lannister, or even the Night King in a bid to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. Featuring both a full single-player campaign and multiplayer modes, the game promises to blend tactical warfare with deep lore and fan-favorite elements from the acclaimed HBO series.

RTS Combat with a Westeros Twist
Each faction in War for Westeros will come equipped with unique mechanics, heroes, and armies. Players can command units such as ground troops, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and even dragons as they battle across iconic Westeros locations like King’s Landing and the Wall.
From the icy wastes beyond the Wall to the war-torn capital, the battlefield will evolve as players vie for dominance. Whether you pledge loyalty to the direwolf of House Stark or bring fire and blood as a Targaryen, War for Westeros aims to offer a blend of large-scale strategy and moment-to-moment tactical decisions.
Game director Ryan McMahon emphasized the game’s intent to fully immerse players in the world of Game of Thrones. "This time, you’re not watching Game of Thrones, you’re playing it," McMahon said, highlighting the game’s dedication to delivering a deeply interactive fantasy war experience.
Part of Warner Bros. Strategy
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. confirmed it would focus its gaming division around four core franchises: Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, and DC. War for Westeros marks a significant move in bringing that strategy to life and continues WB’s push for high-quality licensed titles across platforms.
About PlaySide Studios
PlaySide Studios has built a name for itself through numerous licensed and original projects. The Australian developer has worked on titles like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, The Godfather, Jumanji: Epic Run, Legally Blonde: The Game, and Cars Lightning League. It’s also behind the upcoming indie shooter Mouse: P.I. For Hire, which features a noir twist on classic cartoon aesthetics.
With War for Westeros, the studio is taking on its most ambitious project to date, delivering what could be the most authentic Game of Thrones gaming experience yet.
