Samsung has introduced a new line of portable SSDs, but unlike what it had been selling so far, this new family of products is based on the NVMe interface, meaning, very fast units.

To be more precise, according to the specifications that Samsung has shared, the X5 family offers reading speeds of up to 2800 MB/s and reading speeds of up to 2300 MB/s. That, to illustrate it in some way, could translate into being able to transfer a 4K video file of 20 GB in just 12 seconds.

When using NVMe, these units are much faster than the previous top of the house range, like the T5, which stayed at 540 MB/s using USB 3.1 second generation. The X5 SSD units, meanwhile, are connected to the PC by Thunderbolt 3.

In terms of design, the units are not short either, because they are built in a metal body with a non-slip base, and they also have an internal frame anti-collision. With this, Samsung says they can withstand falls of two meters in height.

For the price that it has, the X5 family seems to be more suitable for professional users and content creators. The 500 gigabytes model goes for $400, the one terabyte reaches $700, and the 2 terabytes is $1400.

Do not fear, on one hand we have these new storages raising the bar of innovation and price, but on the other we also have good news that the NAND will see their prices plummet in 2019.
