The PS Vita is one of those very ambitious projects that may have been way ahead of its time. It is an HD handheld console, and successor to the widely popular PSP, that couldn't thrive due to Sony completely missing the point of the very thing they were marketing - delivering console-quality games.
The library of games on the PS Vita is definitely not a small one and, in fact, some great games can be found if you look hard. Titles like
Gravity Rush shined on the system and are a delight to play on the go. It's exactly that kind of games that the console so needed, but the problem stems from the fact that most of the games on it are spin-offs that had better versions on the PS3.
If you owned a PS Vita, you could play
Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the go, which is a lesser version of any of the
Uncharted games on the PS3 at the time. Or go for
Killzone: Mercenary, which is also a poor man's version of the
Killzone experience you'd get on Sony's home console. Don't get me wrong, both of these games are pretty good, but pretty good just isn't enough. This made Sony rethink their strategy and, making better games being the obvious choice, they decided to stop supporting the PS Vita.
Now, Sony have finally decided to stop production for the Vita's physical games by
March 31st of 2019. The report comes from
Kotaku, as reported by
Siliconera, who got an email from a Sony spokesperson in which it was stated that the company are doing away with the Vita card production.
While the news about Sony ending production for the Vita's physical copies came out of nowhere, it will hardly surprise any one since this has been long over due. That said, physical copies ending production doesn't necessarily mean that the company will stop "supporting" the Vita since going all digital is probably a smart move - 5 years ago.
