There is no doubt that Santa Monica's
God of War has been given players a lot to talk about this past year, releasing back in April and becoming a massive hit; managing even to win Game of the Year at last year's The Game Awards, as well as the DICE Awards.
God of War, as a franchise, is already an established household name — with the first game in the series being released all the way back in 2005 — but, what if the series was called something else? What if it didn't quite roll off the tongue the way it does? As it turns out, the
God of War name was selected at random.
According to David Jaffe — Director for the very first
God of War — the team were undecided on whether the game should be called
God of War,
Dark Odyssey, or
At the Hands of the Gods; leading them to throw all three names in a hat and decide upon the name by randomly drawing them out of the hat.
To be quite fair, all three names work just as well when it comes to accurately representing what the games are about, but
God of War does feel like the right decision at the end of the day; even if it was selected out of sheer luck.
His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive…And teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series—satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative—and fuses them anew.
God of War is currently available for the PlayStation 4.
