Earlier today, Sony PlayStation officially announced a new release date for upcoming and highly anticipated sequel The Last of Us Part II. Many believe that this was a reactionary decision made on account of a huge leak that recently sprung online — more on that here.
Apparently, a disgruntled Naughty Dog employee decided to take to the web with a breakdown of the game's plot and even gameplay footage and cutscenes. Truly, it's a bit of a mess. Many haven't taken kindly to the leaks nor Naughty Dog. Regardless, the studio recently took to Twitter (@Naughty_Dog) with a statement on the matter.
"We know the last few days have been incredibly difficult for you," Naughty Dog's statement begins. "We feel the same. It's disappointing to see the release and sharing of pre-release footage from development. Do your best to avoid spoilers and we ask that you don't spoil it for others.
Finally, the studio assures anticipating fans that the leaks and what people are saying about them shouldn't deter you from being excited nor picking up a copy; "The Last of Us Part II will be in your hands soon. No matter what you see and hear, the final experience will be worth it."
Game director and writer Neil Druckmann (@Neil_Druckmann) retweeted this statement, adding; "Heartbroken for the team. Heartbroken for our fans. We’re still incredibly excited to get the game into your hands."
What's more, Gamesradar receieved the following statement from a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson — which essentially parrots Naughty Dog's sentiments:
We’re disappointed that anyone would release unauthorized pre-launch footage of The Last of Us Part 2, disrupt years of Naughty Dog’s hard work and ruin the experience for fans worldwide. We want everyone to have the opportunity to play The Last of Us Part 2 at the same time and ask that viewing or sharing of the unauthorized footage be avoided.
Five years after their dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming. Living amongst a thriving community of survivors has allowed them peace and stability, despite the constant threat of the infected and other, more desperate survivors. When a violent event disrupts that peace, Ellie embarks on a relentless journey to carry out justice and find closure. As she hunts those responsible one by one, she is confronted with the devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions.
The Last of Us Part II is set to release exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on June 19th, 2020.
