Fighting Layer is a very obscure fighting game that only but a very few outside of Japan actually know about. The game was developed by Arika and published by Namco—releasing for arcades in 1998. Arika had previously worked with Capcom in developing
Street Fighter EX and
Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, two games they took inspiration from when developing
Fighting Layer.
Almost twenty years later, Arika announced that they were working on a Fighting Layer sequel that drew even more inspiration from
Street Fighter EX. The new game was called
Fighting EX Layer, that was first announced during the 2017 EVO, was being developed for the PlayStation 4 and was finally released this past June.
Arika has recently revealed that they were going to be adding three more characters to the
Fighting EX Layer roster. Two of these characters were fighters previously introduced in the Street Fighter EX series, the other character is none other than SNK's very own Terry Bogard—known from the
Fatal Fury and
The King of Fighters series.
The characters from
Street Fighter EX are Pullum Purna, who was in every
Street Fighter EX title until her last appearance in
Street Fighter EX3 Plus, and Vulcano Rosso who has only one appearance under his belt in
Street Fighter EX2 Plus. There is also a surprise tease at the end of the video, which shows Street Fighter EX characters Area and Sharon. There was no official release date but they did say the characters will be available
around the end of August and September.
