Insomniac Games shocked fans of the Marvel Comics character when they revealed the suit Peter Parker would don in Spider-Man PS4. Not only did the costume sport a new white logo, but it also ditched the classic spandex look. And while the developers have said there is a reason Parker adopts a new look in the story, we didn't know why they chose this specific design.
However, while speaking with Variety, art director Jacinda Chew explained why the new suit seen in all of the marketing material is the one they picked for the finished product.
"When we first started designing his new suit … you always start with spandex and it’s not very appealing," Chew said, revealing that a more traditional take on the iconic outfit was considered. "We were like, ‘Wow, that’s not appealing.’ So we started thinking about what looks good in [computer graphics]. How do you give it structure and ground it with real materials?"
So, after finding that spandex wasn't right for a video game, Chew noted that the design for the final suit was "formed by athletic wear," especially in terms of the outfit's different textures. "The blue is the flexibility, the red is thicker so if he scrapes up against a building he has protection. The white is like a flexible carbon fiber."
In all, there was a lot of thought put into the hero's redesign, and even though some fans weren't too happy with the look at first, the reception seems to have improved with each new piece of marketing.
But if you still want something more in line with the comics, there will be a plethora of alternate costumes for players to enjoy, including Spider-Man's classic threads.
