Sony has recently released the results for the first quarter of their financial year, revealing that the PlayStation 4 has managed to sell over 80 million units since it was released 5 years ago.
Since their last report back in April, PlayStation 4 sales had reached the 79 million mark, and since the 1st of April up until the 30th of June the company was able to sell 3.2 million units—crossing the 80 million goal and currently sitting at 82.2 million consoles sold.
IGN reports that, although figures are down compared to the same period seen in 2017, Sony predicts that this is to be expected as their forecast indicates sales will be down by 3 million year-on-year. The company has also stated that their sales regarding software have been of great help thanks to first party titles like
God of War, as well as some other third-party titles, exceeding expectations significantly. It is worth mentioning that digital software sales are also included in these results.
This is also true when it comes to the titles announced during this year's E3, which are also receiving some very strong feedback—probably meaning that their sales will be stronger than ever in the coming months.
God of War alone was able to sell an
impressive 5 million copies within a month after it launched on the 20th of April, probably boosting console sales as well. The new
Spider-Man game by Insomniac is the next big title to release and it will even be including a
special edition console—so it is very likely that Sony will be selling a lot more consoles in the coming months, especially because
Marvel's Spider-Man is aiming to be a console-seller as the most highly anticipated
Spider-Man title in years...which is also a Sony exclusive.
