Wizards of the Coast has announced that 2020 was once again the most successful year for Dungeons & Dragons in its 47 year history. This new report is on the back of 2019, which was also a record year for the franchise. The legendary tabletop game continues to grow and diversify its community and now boasts more than 50 million fans worldwide.

Wizards of the Coast has celebrated the unprecedented year by looking back at the way the team and community came together in 2020, despite COVID-19, by sharing an infographic that illustrates the growth of the brand. The new infographic also highlights some of the key milestones that Dungeons & Dragons fans have to look forward to for 2021.

D&D welcomed even more celebrity players and content creators to the table in 2020, thanks to D&D Live, D&D Celebration, including the casts of Game of Thrones and Stranger Things as well as WWE Superstars and some of the UK's top comedians.

Key stats included in the 2020 infographic below include:

  • More than 50 million players to date!
  • 7th consecutive year of growth
  • 33% increase in year-over-year sales
  • Most pre-ordered book ever (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything)
  • Millions of downloaded free materials from D&D's Stay at Home, Play at Home Hub

2021 should have Dungeons & Dragons fans excited as well! This year will see their upcoming co-op action brawler Dark Alliance coming to Xbox, PC, and PlayStation next month (June 22), the MTG (Magic the Gathering) and D&D crossover Magic expansion Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms coming July 23, and the return of special events such as D&D Live and D&D Celebration.
