Infinity Ward's next instalment in the
Call of Duty franchise
has finally been revealed.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be a soft reboot of the fan-favourite subseries and see the return of the singleplayer campaign mode. Obviously, the game will also include a multiplayer mode.
But what also comes as standard in the
Call of Duty games is a third mode. Treyarch Studios and Sledgehammer Games usually include a Zombies mode in this third slot - and Infinity Ward have also somewhat partaken in that in the past. What will
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's third mode be? At the moment, all we can say for sure is that it won't be Zombies.
PlayStation Lifestyle recently paid a visit to Infinity Ward where they spoke with, Campaign Gameplay Director, Jacob Minkoff. This developer explained that, as
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going for a dark, gritty, and realistic approach, Zombies won't be included as it doesn't suit that style.
Because they focus on more of the stylized, graphic novel, super-hero experience, they can have the much more ‘out there’ different types of gameplay in their games. But for us, we’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.
Minkoff further explained that the upcoming instalment will unify the game's three different modes like none of the previous instalments have before. “Knowing that we needed to keep it more similar across the different modes, we decided to really lean into that, and make it completely continuous.” It will be interesting to see just how much overlap there will be across the modes.
Being pressed to discuss the game's third mode, Minkoff revealed that there will indeed be a co-operative mode of some kind- and it sounds quite similar to the 'Spec Ops' mode which featured in previous Modern Warfare instalments.
We’re not ready to talk about cooperative play yet, but what I will tell you is that the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline. No stop. The events just continue. So those elements—gameplay, progression, story—they just continue throughout everything that we have on the disc or digital download.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to release on October 25th for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
