This year has been hectic, to say the least, but that doesn't mean that technology has stopped innovating while the world has been on pause. For the first half of the year, news outlets were buzzing about the next big console generation and when it would release, and now that day has finally arrived. Last week saw the Sony Playstation 5 and the Microsoft Xbox Series X and S release, and the turnout was larger than anyone expected.
Not only did Microsoft record its largest sales for a console launch ever, but it also made the higher-ups at the company realize that the supply was grossly underestimated when compared to the demand. To lower the risk of spreading COVID-19, both consoles were released online to buyers whose numbers were so great that websites crashed and product was out of stock seconds after it had arrived.
Since then, there have been many lessons learned, and now the wait has come again for when the coveted consoles will reach retail again. According to an interview with Microsoft CFO Tim Stuart, "I think we'll continue to see supply shortages as we head into the post-holiday quarter, so Microsoft's Q3, calendar Q1. And then when we get to Q4, all of our supply chain continuing to go full speed heading into kind of the pre-summer months." Which will essentially mean that players could have to wait until this Spring at the latest for the new consoles.
There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the world of retail and gaming, but that doesn't mean that the Xbox is never making these consoles again. Until then, stay on the hunt, and don't forget to tell us some of your stories about getting these consoles!
