Pro COUNTER-STRIKE Team Misses $30K First Place Finish After Losing Points For Being Late
Were the members of Immortals over confident or did someone just forget to set their alarm clock? Either way, the mistake cost them $30k USD.
Professional eSports organization Immortals competes in a number of circuits but they were the favorites heading into last week's Dreamhack Montreal Counter-Strike Championship against North. With three of its members showing up late to the match, tournment rules meant the Immortals would automatically forfeit the first map to North in a best-of-three match-up.
That meant the Immortals had zero room for error and it seems that pressure was their undoing as they quickly dropped the first actual match played and North went home with $50K USD while Immortals pocketed $20K USD for their troubles.
An oppossing eSports player on CLG (who previously lost to Immortals) claimed on social media that some of the Immortals were hung over.
Of course, the Immortals denied this claim and instead cried foul on Dreamhack, who sped up the matches from the usual tournament pace. However, Dreamhack pointed out that all teams were informed of this change ahead of time and only the Immortals failed to comply.
Immortals CEO Noah Whinston also weighed in on the embarrassing mistake by his team via Twitter.
