The Mega Man live-action film was initially announced in October of 2018, following the release of Capcom's Mega Man 11, which is at the same time that it was revealed that Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman were attached to the project; with NBC's Heroes series Masi Oka and 20th Century Fox(now owned by Disney) producing the movie.
It was in January of this year, however, when the live-action Mega Man movie finally found its writer in The Batman movie and Project Power Writer Mattson Tomlin. More information about the movie has not been revealed, so we still have no idea when Mega Man is expected to hit theatres.
During a recent interview with IGN, directors of the live-action Mega Man film Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman have revealed some rather interesting news about the upcoming movie. More importantly, that this project hasn't been shelved just yet, as many may have already assumed by now.
"That is true," Henry Joost answered to IGN's Terri Schwartz when asked whether Project Power writer Mattson Tomlin was attached to the Mega Man movie.
"We had such a great time working with Mattson on Project Power that we invited him in to help us out with Mega Man. We are super excited about it," Joost revealed. "I think we're going to have some big news about it soon. I can’' say all that much right now, but it's a project very near and dear to our hearts and we're psyched."
Ariel Schulman took the opportunity to reveal something that may make fans of Capcom's critically acclaimed Mega Man series quite happy, mentioning that "Mega Man was the first Nintendo video game I ever played," and also revaling what he likes about the Blue Bomber the most.
"I like that he [Mega Man] is an underdog hero. Both of us are deeply fascinated by robotics and the future of automation, for better and for worse. I think trying to combine that into one of our favorite historical video games is the ultimate challenge," Schulman explained.
It is definitely reassuring to see that Schulman has some attachment to the series, and remembers the original Mega Man dearly as the first Nintendo game he ever played.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is solid proof that live-action movie adaptations of video games can be great if the right people is on board, and the live-action Mega Man film seems to be on the right track. We'll definitely be impatiently waiting to know more about this promising project.
