The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI was suppoused to be unveiled tomorrow but after low-res leaks began to surface, Rockstar decided the best solution would be to just release the official trailer now.
Check out the trailer below, which confirms an official release in 2025.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise has come a long way since the first installment in the series, Grand Theft Auto (1997), which was a 2D affair with players wreaking havoc across three fictional cities: Liberty City (based on New York), San Andreas (based on San Francisco), and Vice City (based on Miami).
GTA 6 arrives roughly 25 years after the founding of Rockstar and a decade after GTA 5's launch. While Rockstar has been cagey on releasing details on GTA 6, development on the game has repotedly been ongoing since 2014.
Of course, Rockstar Games has dealt with a number of work culture controversies over the years that may have factored into why the release of Grand Theft Auto VI has taken so long. The company came under fire for "100-hour work weeks" the studio undertook in order to meet Red Dead Redemption 2's release date deadline. As a result, Dan Houser vowed that no overtime would be required for GTA VI.
In late-2022, the company was also hacked and leakers were able to get their hands on a ton of data releated to GTA 6.
Based on the first trailer, it seems the leaks were true as the leakers revealed that the game would:
- have a playable female protagonist
- the game would be set in modern day Vice City
- the game would be adopting a pseudo live service model with periodic updates provided to give gamers new missions and cities
The game is set to feature 2 protagonist, Jason and Lucia, a modern day homage to Bonnie and Clyde. The trailer also seems to indicate that the game will feature BBLs and social media.
Grand Theft Auto has become one of the most influential and controversial video game franchises of all time, thanks to its blend of dark comedy, social satire, and over-the-top action. It will be intriguing to see where Rockstar takes the series next, but one thing is certain: it will be as bold and provocative as it has always been.
Stay tuned for future coverage as we look towards recieving official updates and an official release date in the coming weeks and months.
