Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim has provided a rare update on the long-awaited sequel to Stellar Blade, confirming that development is actively underway but proceeding with deliberate caution. In a recent interview with 4Gamer, Kim emphasized that the team is working hard to ensure the game is revealed only when it is in “good form,” rather than rushing an early announcement.
While many studios reveal projects far in advance, Shift Up is taking a more measured approach. Kim stated:
“We are working very hard on production, and we want to show it to you when it is finished in good form.”
He added that fans can begin to have “a little bit of expectation” regarding a reveal in the near future, though no specific date or window was given.
Stellar Blade launched in 2024 to strong sales and generally positive reviews for its combat, visuals, and character design, but it faced criticism for its story and pacing. Kim has been open about these shortcomings in the past, and it is clear the studio intends to address them with the sequel.
Shift Up has been busy since the original game’s release. In addition to ongoing support for Goddess of Victory: Nikke, the company is developing Project Spirits and recently acquired Shinji Mikami’s new studio Unbound. Under Shift Up, Unbound will continue creating new IPs for PC and console. Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and director of titles like The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush, brings significant experience to the expanded lineup.
Despite these parallel projects, Kim stressed that Stellar Blade 2 remains a high priority. He noted that every game the studio works on is important, and he does not want the time and effort invested by the team to feel wasted. This philosophy explains the careful, low-profile development approach as the team wants the sequel’s reveal to be a strong, polished moment rather than a premature teaser.
Details on Stellar Blade 2 are still scarce. Previous reports suggested the project was in a research and early production phase, with a potential release window “before 2027.” Rumors have also pointed to a multiplatform launch on PS5 and PC simultaneously, though nothing has been officially confirmed.
The original Stellar Blade was a PlayStation 5 exclusive at launch (later coming to PC), and its success significantly boosted Shift Up’s profile. The sequel is expected to build on the strong action gameplay while delivering a more compelling narrative and deeper world-building.
Kim’s comments suggest Shift Up is prioritizing quality over speed. By avoiding early reveals and focusing on internal polish, the studio aims to deliver a game that addresses the first title’s weaknesses while expanding on its strengths in combat, exploration, and character moments.
Whether Stellar Blade 2 arrives before 2027 or slightly later, the cautious development approach indicates confidence in the project. The fact that Kim is willing to acknowledge growing anticipation is a positive sign that the team feels the game is progressing well behind the scenes.
For now, fans will have to wait for an official reveal, which Kim hinted could come sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Shift Up continues to support its existing titles and expand its portfolio through the Unbound acquisition.
The original Stellar Blade proved the studio could deliver a stylish, engaging action game. If the sequel lives up to the careful development philosophy outlined by its CEO, it has the potential to be an even stronger follow-up. Do you think it will live up to the hype?
