Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the 12th installment in the main line Assassin's Creed series, and it is already introducing new concepts that will change some elements just enough to make things feel fresh.

Earlier this week we were treated to a brand new video that showed off the game's more polished naval combat—keeping things pretty much the same; offering the same mechanics that players have grown fond of over the years. Chants will also be making a comeback, especially sicne they were one of players' favourite things while traversing the waters in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

One of the things that have actually been changing, for a while now, are some elements that will change the way players experience the story. Assassin's Creed games have always been somewhat linear when it comes to the story; players could do anything they wanted in-between missions but the story would not change because of it.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey will be offering players different choices as they play through the game, choices that may well end up changing some parts of the story depending on their actions and how they approach certain situations.

In a recent interview with Gamereactor, Assassin's Creed Odyssey Game Director Scott Philips said that there were two big things that they wanted to achieve.

"One was putting choice at the center of the experience, so choice and consequences and bringing dialogue options and impacts to the decisions that you make across the game", bringing a new element not very intrinsic in Assassin's Creed games thus far.

The second thing Philips mentioned the team wanted was to make Assassin's Creed Odyssey a "full-on RPG", and giving players multiple pathways for them to progress—going beyond what Assassin's Creed Origins did for the series.

Philips also mentions the naval open-world, and being able to upgrade the ships, character gears, and even engave said gear.

"We've got naval as well, so you've got seamless open-world naval where you can progress your ship and upgrade that, you've got your character where you're getting new gear, you can engrave that gear with special perks to make it your playstyle, so choice gets interwoven into that".

When it comes to combat, Philips says that players will be given a number of abilities that they can upgrade—adding more layers to the game's combat while staying consistent with the combat found in other entries of the series; but always offering players the choice to choose what they want.

"You've got abilities which sort of mix up the combat and give you a lot of new options within the fight, so you've got the same core basic fights as Assassin's Creed Origins, but we've improved it and additionally added on these abilities which you have to build up adrenalin before you spend adrenalin on an ability within the combat. It's really mixed up the combat and made it into a much stronger overall RPG experience with the choice sort of combined into it".

What Scott Philips probably means, by making Assassin's Creed Odyssey a "full-on RPG", is to basically give players the choice to upgrade their characters, gear, ships, and abilities—but the game is likely still focusing more on the action-adventure aspect the series is known for.

It's always nice when the developers focus on delivering their best product possible and Assassin's Creed Odyssey seems to be on the right path. Some fans claim that the series is not what it used to be when it first came out, reaching its peak with the brillian Assassin's Creed 2, but Ubisoft and the team behind Odyssey really do want to give players more options for them to enjoy the game—which is something gamers should commend them for.
