As a full-blown RPG,
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey features some of the most imprecise cutscenes in the history of video games. With detailed graphics, powerful performances (mostly by Melissanthi Mahut [Kassandra] and Michael Antonakos [Alexios]), and witty dialogues, Ubisoft Quebec's title has nothing to be ashamed of in that area and can stand next to 2015's
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt with confidence.
In a recent interview with Ubisoft, the narrative designer who oversaw the creation of many in-game scenes, Stephen Rhodes, explained his original approach to directing the cutscenes. "
I learn a lot from every game I work on, but when it comes to narrative, I've learned some very crucial lessons regarding choices and characterization," Rhodes said. "
In a large game like Odyssey, the player meets so many characters, and it's important to make sure they all feel distinct, and have their own clear motives and ideologies. They have to feel like real people with real problems that we as players can relate to and empathize with. When it comes to characters, I've always tried to inject personality into each and every one, even if it's just a certain phrase they use, or a way of speaking."
"
We have been very lucky, on the production of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, to work with some incredibly talented actors. I always have a great time recording dialogue with them," Rhodes added.
"They're fun to work with, and they have a lot of experience to offer in order to make the character feel or sound better.
When we are recording, I'll usually give direction on line delivery to ensure certain beats are being hit, or certain things are emphasized within the dialogue," Rhodes concluded.
Ubisoft has released a new "
behind the scenes" video for an inside look at the game's script and differences between written words and in-game version of the screenplay. Check it out down below:
