Bethesda has officially announced
Prey’s free
Typhon Hunter mode scheduled to launch over the summer at their lackluster E3 2018 media briefing. Since that reveal two things have definitely changed - first of all,
Typhon Hunter has missed its release windows, as it will now launch on December 11. The other news is much worse, as it is free only to
Prey: Digital Deluxe and the
Prey: Mooncrash DLC.
According to Bethesda,
Typhon Hunter is a lethal game of hide-and-seek between a single survivor (the game's main protagonist Morgan Yu) and five other players who stalk, hunt, and hide in plain sight as shape-shifting Mimic aliens. Yes, in the upcoming DLC every player can channel their inner shape-shifting Mimic alien to transform themselves into everyday, ordinary objects like mugs.
In the DLC, "
each round kicks off with a brief prep period for the Mimic players, during which they can scope out potential hiding spots and plan ambushes. After that, the hunt is on. Morgan’s goal is to hunt down all five Mimics with a Wrench or Pistol before the time is up. The Mimics can do their best to stay hidden and wait it out, or they can try to take Morgan down. The latter is a high-risk strategy, as Morgan can respawn after a death timer, but the Mimics only have one life. It’s a tense game of cat-and-mouse where the mice can turn into toilet-paper rolls or garbage cans that can kill you. But if Morgan can manage to find and kill all Mimics before time expires, the round is his."
This asymmetrical multiplayer mode will surely enrich the core
Prey experience with players' ridiculous traps and strategies, a special VR mode for PlayStation 4 and PC, jumpscares galore, and TranStar VR, a singly-player VR-only campaign that will be included in the
Typhon Hunter update putting you in the shoes of various TranStar employees to complete objectives and solve puzzles. Take a look:
In Prey, you awaken aboard Talos I, a space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032. You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong.
