When the original Life is Strange was first released nearly 10 years ago, the Max Caulfield we met was just discovering the power she had to rewind time. In Life is Strange: Double Exposure, she discovers a new power — the ability to Shift between two parallel timelines.
Why is this important? The plot of Life is Strange: Double Exposure revolves around Max Caufield, now a photographer-in-residence at Caledon University, discovering her closest new friend, Safi, dead in the snow — murdered.
"To save her, Max tries to Rewind time – a power she’s not used in years… instead, Max opens the way to a parallel timeline where Safi is still alive, and still in danger! Max realizes the killer will soon strike again – in both versions of reality. Only Max can Shift between the two parallel timelines to solve and prevent the same murder," the synopsis teases.
In a newly released video from Square Enix, developer Deck Nine offers a deep dive into Max Caufield's new power to Shift between two parallel timelines. In addition to this, the video focuses on her new Pulse Ability. As described by the developer:
Pulse allows Max to glimpse the opposite timeline before jumping through, since danger isn’t limited to just one timeline. With Pulse, Max can also overhear conversations happening on the other side, which is the perfect supernatural tool for an amateur sleuth.
In Life is Strange; Double Exposure, Max will have to use both of her newfound powers to solve her friend Safi's impossible murder. Max will have to shift back and forth between two increasingly difficult timelines as the player uses these powers to solve unique puzzles, navigate complex campus social dynamics and explore all of the mysteries of Caledon University.
The synopsis for Life is Strange: Double Exposure reads:
