Google is one of the biggest companies in the world, so their increasing interest in the gaming industry bodes well for how far we've come. But, will they be able to compete with such gaming giants like Sony and Microsoft?
Google have tried to make their presence felt in the gaming industry for quite some time, and even tried to acquire twitch in 2014. Google have also worked with developers in the past on projects which never quite materialised, there were also rumours of an android console which could rival the amazon Kindle fire, but once again nothing really came of this.
There was talk of Google making their first big step into the gaming industry earlier this year by launching their own streaming platform, code-named Yeti. This streaming platform would practically elimate harware limitations and allow gamers to play high end games on fairly cheap PCs and laptops therefore eliminating the need for graphic cards. Streaming seems to be the next big thing for the gaming industry with the heads of Xbox and Ubisoft, Phil Spencer and Yves Guillemot, both expressing an interest.
However, this is only one stage of Google's venture into the gaming industry. According to industry sources Google are also planning to release their own console and are aggresively pursuing development teams. Although, Google's success in this industry is questionable to say the least. What games would this console launch with? How would Google be able to entice developers to work for them? Will Google's console be able to hold it's own against the Playstation 4 and Xbox One? These are all questions we attempt to answer on the first episode on the Gamefragger Podcast.
