One of the biggest questions newcomers, and even some veterans, have when approaching a new Monster Hunter game is "which is the best weapon?" The internet is filled with lists that rank each of the weapons in specific tier categories, with S representing the best of the best. With Monster Hunter Wilds, which just launched today, there are already countless articles and videos that rank all 14 weapons.
As it currently stands at launch there are 14 weapons to choose from in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Great Sword
- Long Sword
- Sword & Shield
- Dual Blades
- Hammer Sword
- Hunting Horn
- Lance
- Gunlance
- Switch Axe
- Charge Blade
- Insect Glaive
- Light Bowgun
- Heavy Bowgun
- Bow
Each of these weapons provides a distinct playstyle and unique strategy when engaging in combat. The Great Sword, for example, is a weighty weapon with slower movements and attacks, but more more powerful attacks. It's an adaptable weapon suitable for hit-and-run tactics or guarding.
Compare that to the Dual Blades, which are designed for rapid attacks. These are straight-forward damage dealing weapons for thsoe who enjoy quick and fluid combat.
Then there are ranged options like the Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun, and Bow. While all of these provide the ability to attack at a range, they do vary in their attack range, firing speed, and damage capability.
There are so many options to choose from and odds are you'll find something to suit your playstyle. The great thing about Monster Hunter in general is that you aren't locked into your decision. You are free to choose any weapon you want prior to embarking on a hunt, so feel to free to play around with each and get a feel for them.
This brings me to the point of the whole article, weapon rankings and tier lists. You may be tempted to choose your weapon based on what others say is the strongest in the game.
I'm here to tell you, don't do that. While some weapons are definitely easier to get a hang of for beginners, choosing your weapon based on strength won't make the game more enjoyable. Sure, it may be strong, but if it doesn't scratch your playstyle itch, you'l remain unfulfilled. On the same note, if one of the more complicated weapons are believed to be the best, it may lead to frustration if you can't really grasp the mechanics.
The fact of the matter is every weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds is viable. Every weapon is capable of taking down even the strongest of monsters in the game, so don't worry too much about rankings. Trying to change your playstyle to fit the "meta" will ultimately lead to disappointment. The best thing you can do is find a weapon that fits your playstyle and that you enjoy using. If it's a weapon you're good with and enjoy, then I guarantee you'll do just fine.
Monster Hunter Wilds shouldn't be about speedruns and clear time. For starters, each weapon has their own individual category, so ranking them is kind of pointless. Tier lists are usually based on their clear time ability, but if you truly want to have fun and embrace the spirit of Monster Hunter Wilds, the only tier list you should pay attention to is the one that ranks weapons based on the "fun" meter.
Monster Hunter Wilds is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Which weapon is your favorite to use?
