It has been quite a while since we've had any news regarding Greg Russo's upcoming Mortal Kombat live-action movie. Most, if not all, of the actors have already been cast, and the film is scheduled to release in the United States on Friday the 15th of January.
Mortal Kombat will see Liu Kang being played by Ludi Lin, Sub-Zero(Bi-Han) is being played by Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano in the role of Raiden, Chin Han as the villanous Shang Tsung, and Jessica McNamee will play femme fatale Sonya Blade.
It has been reported that Johnny Cage will also be a character in the movie, although the actor has yet to be cast. Similarly, actor Lewis Tan has been cast in Mortal Kombat, but his role has yet to be disclosed — although some people theorise that he'll be playing Bi-Han's younger brother, and current Sub-Zero, Kuai Liang.
The latest bit of information about the movie actually comes from Lewis Tan himself, who has revealed a rather interesting detail about the upcoming movie. In fact, he specifically talks about the Fatalities in Mortal Kombat, and just how gruesome they are.
"Let me just say this, there were some days on set that I felt sick. I'm not kidding. They did not... They did not hold back," Tan revealed in a recent interview with Comicbook.
In July of last year, Mortal Kombat movie director Greg Russo revealed that the film will be rated R, while also confirming that, for the first time ever, Fatalities will be on the big screen. Russo also confirmed that some Fatalities will be new, but they were also looking to faithfully recreate some of the classic Fatalities seen in the game.
The Mortal Kombat live-action film is adapting the first tournament, which covers the events during the very first Mortal Kombat game. Fatalities in the first game could've looked tame due to graphical limitations, but they were actually quite gruesome, all things considered, so it will be interesting to see some of them in the movie.
Mortal Kombat is expected to release in theatres in January, so we should expect a proper trailer in the coming months. With everything we've heard about the project, however, it seems that this could well be the movie that fans have always wanted; without disrespecting Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 adaptation, of course.
Mortal Kombat is expected to hit theatres on Friday the 15th of January in 2021.
