New footage from the upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel has been released courtesy of Warner Bros. The film highlights the robust fighter roster present in the film as new characters such as Jade, Quan Chi, Shao Khan, and more.
Interestingly enough, Karl Urban as Johnny Cage has been the focal point of the film's marketing, a sharp departure from the game series where Liu Kang is often the perennial protagonist. Fans and moviegoers alike are curious to see how that narrative shift will play out, on screen.
Recently, director Simon McQuoid stated, "The thing we wanted to embrace was the outrageous nature of Mortal Kombat. I got better at seeing that as an advantage. Then we amplify things, so that we carve out our own unique space in the greater cinematic landscape...It’s really easy for something like this to slide into the ridiculous, and then you don’t care as much. I hope the scope of the film comes from how audiences feel about the characters, having a deeper connection with them. My hope was to do a better job than I did on the first one in that respect."
Mortal Kombat 2 was originally slated to be released on October 24, 2025, but with Warner Bros. Discovery having an unexpectedly successful year at the box office in 2025, the studio opted to delay the pic to boost 2026's financial earnings.
From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite
champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
