The
Street Fighter series has been around since the first game came out in 1987 but didn't become a household name until 1991 when
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior came out and completely revolutionised the fighting genre. The success of the game made made the developers revise the game, which saw up to 4 different iterations within a 3-year span, ending with
Super Street Fighter II Turbo(1994) for arcades - becoming the definitive
Street Fighter 2 version.
It was in 1995 that Capcom introduced us to
Street Fighter Alpha, which is a prequel, and spinoff of sorts, that followed the story prior to the events in
Street Fighter 2, but after the events that took place in the first
Street Fighter. The Alpha series was a completely new game that played like the original games, but looked completely different by opting for a more anime approach. While the
Alpha game was a
Street Fighter game at heart, it also introduced new mechanics like the Alpha Counters and Chain combos, which definitely changed the pacing of the fights.
Street Fighter Alpha got two sequels in the following years, each adding slight improvements over the main
Street Fighter series, as well as the original
Alpha game, which made the series stand firmly on its own. The games also began featuring characters from Capcom's popular beat 'em up
Final Fight who are, even to this day, being featured in more recent games like
Super Street Fighter IV and
Street Fighter V.
