Blade Strangers is an indie 2D fighting game with gorgeous animated sprites, that has been getting some traction lately thanks to some popular indie characters joining as guest characters.
A few days ago we got an
official announcement that Gunvolt, from
Azure Striker Gunvolt, was going to be joining the fight. This time is
Shovel Knight's turn to shine as he is officially announced as a fighter by Nicalis.
Shovel Knight is the main character in a 2D platformer by independent developer Yacht Club Games, that first showed up in the game of the same name
Shovel Knight. The game was initially released on the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and PC, and would later be ported to other platforms such as OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The game was inspired by popular games from the NES era such as
Mega Man,
Ducktales, and even
Super Mario Bros. It is the best example of a game that embraces the retro aesthetic with a purpose and not just for the sake of catering to a specific demographic. Needless to say,
Shovel Knight is one of the best retro platformers ever made.
Now,
Shovel Knight is joining
Blade Strangers and even got a slight redesign, making the character fit better with the aesthetics of Nicalis and Studio Saizensen's 2D fighting game, and has even been given a voice.
Hopefully Yacht Club games looks to this design for the character if they ever decide to make a Shovel Knight sequel with 16 or even 32-bit graphics. In the meantime, fans will be ble to get shoveling when Shovel Knight joins the
Blade Strangers roster this
Summer.
A malevolent force known only as Lina is devouring data from a vast, interdimensional network of servers overseen by sentient computers called ”motes.” In desperation, the motes summon heroes from a variety of parallel game worlds to face off against each other in one-on-one combat. The tournament victor has the potential to be awakened as the Blade Stranger—the savior who can vanquish Lina and protect the motes from further harm!
Blade Strangers hasn't been given an official release date but is expected to come out for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC this Summer.
