Bungie has announced the next major expansion for Destiny 2 — find out more about that here. Bungie didn't only announce one expansion for Destiny 2, though, but rather three.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 22nd, but Destiny 2: The Witch Queen and Destiny 2: Lightfall will launch in 2021 and 2022, respectively, for both the current generation and the next generation. Confirmation of these expansions is all we got, no in-game footage nor animatics.
What's more, Destiny 2: Lightfall is also apparently only a working title for the third and seemingly final expansion. "We're building Destiny's future today, right inside of Destiny 2," said Destiny 2 general manager Mark Noseworthy on the future of Destiny. "It starts with Beyond Light coming this fall."
Furthermore, series director Luke Smith spoke with popular Twitch streamer Dr Lupo (via The Verge) about the future of Destiny. According to Smith, Bungie isn't planning to make a third Destiny game. "I'll say we're not planning to make one. We believe really strong about building the future of Destiny inside Destiny 2. This is the way."
That's certainly an interesting route to take. They do seem to have planned all the way up to 2022 with their expansions for Destiny 2. However, just because they aren't currently planning to make Destiny 3 doesn't mean they won't consider it in the future — perhaps after they make it all of these major Destiny 2 expansions.
