Epic Games, the company behind the wildly popular battle royale game Fortnite, is acquiring Psyonix, the independent studio behind another explosive game, Rocket League. In a post on the company website, Psyonix confirmed they are joining the Epic Game family while explaining what this means for Rocket League moving forward.
The developer says not much will change in the short term, as they'll still provide "frequent updates" with new features, content, and new ways to play the game. The acquisition does mean, however, that Rocket League will be coming to the Epic Games store, which Psyonix says is "a win foreverybody" since it will bring the game "to new audiences with more support." Psyonix also believes Rocket League's eSports ecosystem will greatly benefit from joining Epic Games.
When Rocket League arrives on the Epic Games store, it will presumably no longer be available for purchase through Steam. However, Psyonix clarified that anyone who owns the game through Steam will still be able to play it and can expected continued support through that particular storefront.
Released in 2015, Rocket League received rave reviews as it combined "arcade-style soccer and vehicular mayhem" with adrenaline-fueled sports, particularly soccer; although, the game has experimented with basketball in the past as well. Rocket League is currently available on Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
