This week, Epic Games announced a
mobile version of
Fortnite Battle Royale. What's more, the mobile version will have cross-play and cross-progression between PC/Mac and consoles (
Xbox One and PS4). With all of the systems intertwined, the only ones left without cross-play support are the Xbox One and PlayStation 4; these players can not play together.
However, that wouldn't be the case if it were up to Microsoft and
Fortnite developer Epic Games. Both companies expressed support for cross-play between the two brand systems on social media today. Responding to a fan request for cross-play between Xbox One and PS4, Microsoft's Phil Spencer replied "Me [too]," followed by a "We 3" from Epic.
Sony's PlayStation Twitter account did not reply to the thread, and it's unlikely they will either. Microsoft has long expressed interest in cross-play with its competitor, but Sony has pretty much shot them down on every offer.
Microsoft first brought up the idea of Xbox and PlayStation cross-play with
Minecraft (which Microsoft owns), but PlayStation exec Jim Ryan said the company was concerned about the safety of its users. Particularly, Ryan was concerned that Sony would not be able to fully control the online experience, putting children at risk. For what it's worth Nintendo has already agreed to cross-play support with Microsoft for
Minecraft.
