Sony only recently announced a Fortnite bundle for the PS4 a few days ago but Microsoft has already countered.
It's hard to think that all of the shenanigans and competition between
Player Unknown's Battlegrounds and
Fortnite: Battle Royale started just last September.
In under 12 months,
Fortnite has gone from a struggling, single-player campaign in beta to a pop culture phenomenon.
PUBG is still churning out solid numbers but its player base is shrinking due to
Fortnite's popularity.
Back at E3 2017, XBox scored a rare win by announcing that PUBG would be a time-exclusive. At the time, PUBG reigned supreme and Xbox One owners lauded the exclusive deal over their PS4 peers. The game was officially
rolled out for the console in December and remains
a popular title to this day, despite several issues and bugs.
However, (perhaps due to PUBG's timed-exclusive deal with Microsoft) Fortnite became the game of choice for the PS4 and it was noted back in June
that PUBG's player count had dropped by 50%. A few weeks later, a S
ony PS4 Fortnite bundle was announced. Keep in mind, that while one game waned and another surged, there was a looming court case between the Epic Games and Bluehole.
Yesterday, Microsoft unveiled their own plans for a bundle that includes their own popular battle royale game. The Xbox One X bundle retails for $499 and includes a download code for PUBG, along with a free trial pass for Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft also announced that PUBG has been the most popular game on the console since its launch and recently surpassed 8 million players.
