Nuketown is finally back, returning as a reimagined version of the fan-favorite map in
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
First introduced in the first
Call of Duty: Black Ops, Nuketown was originally based on a typical 1950's U.S. subrb used to demonstrate the effects of a nuclear weapon on a residential area. The map, which is among the smallest in the franchise, was an instant hit with fans and has returned in every subsequent
Black Ops title. Each game in the franchise has offered its own unique spin on the classic map, reimagining it to better fit the theme of the title.
Black Ops 2, for example, reimagined it as "a 1960s retro-futuristic Mid-Century modern style meant to represent the 'Home of the Future' for 2025."
Black Ops 3 turned it into a Coalescence Corporation built simulation based off the original map.
Black Ops 4 is no different, reimagining it as a Russian-designed test site. Interestingly, it now appears that the map itself is atop an underground missile bunker. Check out the trailer which was released yesterday in anticipation of today's launch.
With the backdrop for this nuclear testing site now set in the icy, unforgiving winter climate of Chernobyl, Nuketown is free for everyone, first on PS4 with other platforms to follow.
Nuketown is currently only available on PlayStation as part of a one-week timed exclusivity deal between Activision and Sony. It'll arrive on Xbox One and PC next week. Nuketown is free for all players.
