Yesterday was Minecraft's 11th anniversary, and Mojang celebrated this special day by revealing that the insanely popular sandbox survival game has sold over a very impressive 200 million units since its originally launch all the way back on the 17th of May in 2009.
The Swedish developer has also taken this opportunity to reveal that they are rebranding the company to Mojang Studios; decision made in order to unify their dual studios in Redmond and Stockholm, and that expects to bring both teams even closer together.
As revealed by Studio Head of Mojang Studios, Helen Chiang, over an equally impressive 126 million people play Minecraft on a monthly basis — which is quite remarkable considering that this is an 11 year old game we're talking about here.
While Chiang doesn't mention this on the official post shared on Xbox Wire, these numbers are more than likely been boosted by the COVID-19. With all that said, this still doesn't take away from neither the game nor its performance; those sales and number of monthly players would've been impressive regardless of the pandemic.
Minecraft Dungeons is being released next week — on Tuesday the 26th of May, to be more precise — and the franchise will get even more followers, since this game caters more to the action/adventure demographic, so it will be interesting to see what kind of launch this new title has.
Either way, these have been a fantastic 11 years for the developer and the Minecraft series in general, and we cannot wait to see what they will do next. Congratulations, Mojang Studios.
