Warner Bros. in-production Minecraft movie adaptation has suffered from a series of dire setbacks - it's time to add another to the list.

According to a recent report by TheWrap, co-writer and director Rob McElhenney has exited the project. The film was slated to release as soon as May of next year, however following McElhenney's departure, that is no longer the case.

On top of this directoral exit, Warner Bros. has decided to totally scrap the previous script. Instead, a wholly new one will be written by Adam Nee and his brother Aaron. The Nee Brothers are are most predominantly known for 2006's The Last Romantic and 2015's Band of Robbers. The scrapped script was writen by both McElhenney and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman).

It is unknown why Warner Bros. has decided to throw out all of McElhenney's work on the project - as well as why McElhenney himself decided to drop out of what would have been his first directing credit.

Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) was also previously attached as director and subsequently replaced with McElhenney - meaning that, thus far, this is the second instance of a director departing from the Minecraft movie.

What do you think about McElhenney's departure? Do you think the Minecraft movie will ever see the light of day?
