Netflix has confirmed that Telltale Games will be bringing its interactive narrative series
Minecraft: Story Mode to the streaming service. Responding to a report by Tech Radar, Netflix clarified that a five-episode series will be arriving on its service this fall.
We can confirm Minecraft: Story Mode is a licensed 5-episode interactive narrative series coming to our service this fall. It's an extension of our other interactive stories we have on our service like Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile.
As Netflix mentioned,
Minecraft: Story Mode won't be the company's first interactive content aimed at kids. There are currently two other interactive series on the streaming service.
First, there's
Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, which takes the iconic
Shrek character and drops him into a storybook where he must
"fight, dance and romance his way through wild adventures as he searches for an escape."
There's also
Buddy Thunderstruck, which is about a truck-racing dog
"who brings guts and good times to the town of Greasepit."
Minecraft: Story Mode is set in the blocky universe of
Minecraft and follows a character named Jesse who attempts to save the world. Although the actual
Minecraft game has no real story, Telltale specially created their own for the narrative adventure game.
The first season in October 2015, followed by a second season in July 2017. Netflix confirmed their
Story Mode will consist of five interactive episodes, though it's unclear how it will look or play exactly. The company stressed they have no interest in adding traditional games to its service at the moment. The point-and-click nature of a Telltale game, which emphasizes narrative and story, however, should lend itself quite nicely to the Netflix service.
"We don’t have any plans to get into gaming," a Netflix spokesperson said. "There’s a broad spectrum of entertainment available today. Games have become increasingly cinematic, but we view this as interactive narrative storytelling on our service."
In addition to
Minecraft: Story Mode, Netflix is also teaming with Telltale
to create a game based on the hit sci-fi show Stranger Things. That game will release on consoles and PC, however.
