Yesterday Microsoft announced that they had purchased ZeniMax Media, the parent company of ZeniMax Online Studios and Bethesda — in what is probably one of the most surprising announcements of the year; in regards to the video game industry, of course.

The announcement was met with optimism, but also with some concern from players who believe this acquisition could be detrimental to some renowned intellectual properties like DOOM, Wolfenstein, and The Elder Scrolls. The reason? many assumed that all of Bethesda's franchises will now be exclusive to Microsoft platforms.

In an official statement released yesterday, Bethesda's Todd Howard actually revealed that exclusivity may not apply to all of their properties. In fact, his statement was rather vague in this regard, but it did reassure that they were still committed to delivering the same quality products to players; no matter the console they play on.

"We share a deep belief in the fundamental power of games, in their ability to connect, empower, and bring joy. And a belief we should bring that to everyone - regardless of who you are, where you live, or what you play on. Regardless of the screen size, the controller, or your ability to even use one," read Howard's statement on the buyout.

Studio Director of ZeniMax Online Studios Matt Firor has also got some uplifting news for The Elder Scrolls Online players, as he also reassures that they will continue to support the popular MMORPG title on PlayStation 4 following Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media.

"I want to take this moment to reassure the entire Elder Scrolls Online community that ESO will continue to be supported exactly as it was, and we fully expect it to keep growing and thriving on each of the platforms that are currently supported," explained Firor.

He then added: "We are very happy with the news, and can't wait to see how the two companies working together can make ESO even better for everyone.I definitely want to thank you, the dedicated community that makes Elder Scrolls Online the huge phenomenon that it is today - we created the world, but it is you all: the fans and community of the game that give it life.

"Thank you so much for being part of the success story of ZOS and ESO - and rest assured in the knowledge that we are focused on supporting you for many more years to come."

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, Microsoft Windows, and macOS, and the developers announced last month that the game will also release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

At this point in time, however, it is unknown whether The Elder Scrolls Online will also launch on PlayStation 5, but it is still reassuring to know that those who own the game on PlayStation 4 will be able to keep playing it; in spite of the buyout.
