Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a colourful 2D action-adventure game by developed by Game Atelier and published by FDGGames coming for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One on the 28th of August. A Steam version of the game is set for a Winter release this year. It is worth mentioning that only the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of the game will get physical releases, and will only be available in the US and Canada. The game was made in cooperation with Ryuchi Nishizawa, creator of the classic Wonder Boy series on the Sega Master System back in 1988.
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap(1989) was remade from the ground up in 2017 and made available for for modern consoles with update hand drawn graphics, which inspired the look and gameplay mechanics for
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.
While creator Ryuchi Nishizawa is involved in
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, the game is not a sequel to the
Wonder Boy series, but a spiritual successor that borrows all the best elements of the classic titles and improves upon them to deliver a unique, and new experience to players—while still keeping what made the classics, well classics.
Gameplaywise,
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will see players taking control of a character named Jin, who has the ability to transform into 6 different creatures that each have their own set of skills and abilities. In the classic Wonder Boy fashion, players will be taking on huge bosses and finding hidden passages in this open-world game while enjoying some upbeat music and thos beautiful hand drawn graphics.
