Puzzle Fighter is a puzzle/fighting game that features characters mainly from the
Street Fighter franchise, as well as some other flagship characters from various Capcom franchises. In the game players control pairs of blocks that drop in a
Tetris kind of fashion. These blocks need to be eliminated by touching a Crash Gem of the same colour, these drop patterns also allow the player to attack the opponent.
Puzzle Fighter was initially announced in August 2017 for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, and was released in November of the same year. It is a sequel to
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo released back in 1996 that later so a mobile port in 2017.
Not even 6 months later and the game has been officially announced to be cancelled via a post on the Capcom Unity site.
According to the
official announcement, the studio is shifting their focus to work on their flagship Dead Rising franchise instead. As of now the game is still available to purchase from the store but will be removed on the 1st of July and will still be playable until the 31st of the same month. Because of the sunset announcement, players will be awarded 10,000 in-game gem currency. In-app purchases will be disabled on the
23rd of April but any in-game gems purchased can still be used until the server closure.
They are also making Regina, Dr. Wily and Ada Wong playable earlier and will also release Darminor and Uroboros Laboratory stages for free until the game stops being supported. Classic Mode that used to be a special limited event will now be available at all times until the server is shut down.
The announcement also mentions the
Puzzle Fighter soundtrack will be available to
stream online for free via SoundCloud. All of that as a consolation prize, I guess. Whatever the case, it is quite disappointing that they were not even able to commit to a game for 6 months before jumping ship and deciding to focus their efforts on another project.
