Earlier this year,
we reported on
Fallout: New Vegas creators Obsidian Entertainment registering a trademark for something called
The Outer Worlds. During last night's Game Awards stream, it was officially unveiled to us.
Obsidian shared a trailer for the game, which looks to be a single-player first-person sci-fi RPG. We're given a glimpse of an expansive universe filled with all sorts of interesting characters and unique creatures. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect comes at the end when the trailer alludes to a system that truly takes into account player choice.
In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship lost in transit to its destination on the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
The Outer Worlds promises to be a very player-driven story which is what one would expect with an RPG from Obsidian, developers of
Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and the
Pillars of Eternity franchise. Co-game directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, original creators of
Fallout, have reunited for this project so perhaps it comes as no surprise that the game looks very similar to that beloved franchise with sci-fi bits of
Mass Effect and even
BioShock mixed in.
“There's something very special about the combination of my lighter humor and Leonard's darker take on things. It affects everything in the game - the setting, the characters, the dialogs,” said Tim Cain, co-game director at Obsidian. “Plus, we have a great team here at Obsidian, and we're making sure The Outer Worlds delivers what players want from a new RPG universe.”
The Outer Worlds is set to release in 2019 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Yes, despite Obsidian being owned by Microsoft now, it appears this game will be multiplatform, likely due it being in development long before Microsoft acquired the developer. If you were intrigued by the trailer, be sure to
